Does Dry Skin Necessarily Mean Ichthyosis?
Many patients with dry skin worry that they might be suffering from ichthyosis. In reality, while dry skin is a characteristic symptom of ichthyosis, it is not synonymous with the condition itself.
Dry skin typically results from impaired skin metabolism and barrier function. It is predominantly caused by acquired factors—such as dry weather, excessive cleansing, inadequate skincare, or dehydration due to late nights—and is usually temporary. These symptoms can often be quickly alleviated by applying body lotion or by making adjustments to one's lifestyle and environment.
Ichthyosis, on the other hand, is a genetic disorder characterized by a defect in skin metabolic function; it is a hereditary skin condition. Its symptoms are persistent: the skin remains dry throughout the year—though symptoms may subside slightly during the summer months, they do not disappear completely—and standard skincare regimens offer only limited improvement.
Therefore, ordinary dry skin can be restored simply through timely care.
